We are allaware of the good that fundraising does, but is it worth it at your kid’sexpense? Going from door to door, handling money, and consistently approachingstrangers are all very common and dangerous practices of traditionalfundraising.

Followingare a few tips to help navigate through fundraising in a safer manner:

Step 1:ALWAYS have an adult present when going door to door. Going with your childwhen they are selling fundraising products seems obvious, but there are manyincidents where parents will let their children go out and do this on their owncarrying cash, checks and products can leads to things as extreme as abduction andother very serious crime.

Step 2:NEVER let your children walk around with their fundraised money as they areselling. Every time your child makes a sale make sure as the parent or guardianwith them that you are collecting that money from them so they aren’t forced towalk around with large sums of money.

Step 3:ALWAYS make sure that your child is with at least one person when going out todo their fundraising. It’s not practical to assume that all parents can helpall children with their fundraising, which is understandable, so if that is thecase be sure to find an older family member or someone older that you trust togo with them.

Step 4: BESURE to do a little research when picking an area to do your fundraising. Inother words, don’t send your children to knowingly unsafe neighborhoods, storelocations, etc. By simply doing this step you can eliminate a lot of commonworries when it comes to your children addressing strangers, especially whenasking them for money. Try to target areas where there are many families andeven elderly folks, people that may have dealt with school fundraising at somepoint.

Step 5:LAST, BUT NOT LEAST, still try to have a little fun with it! Fundraising issomething that we will always have to do and as the years go on it gets harderand harder so make sure that your kids are still enjoying themselves. The worldis increasingly becoming a more dangerous place, especially for children, so byfollowing these steps you should be able to avoid them and enjoy yourselves!

Thedangers of fundraising are getting higher, and the funds collected seem to begetting lower. So, what do we do? Is there something out there that allows usto raise the money we need, but not have to worry about our children gettinghurt or violated? Fortunately, the answer is yes!

It’s the first week of August and many of us are still enjoying the summer and not thinking about school starting next month. If you haven't noticed yet, our retailers are getting ready for "Back to School." If you have noticed, you are probably saying to yourself "But it’s only August". Yes it is only August. But a school supply list is waiting for you with the name of your child's school on it. I took a few moments and looked at different school supply lists and I noticed that some lists are very long. I wondered if anyone had ever taken the time to add up how much all of those school supplies would cost. It's great that the schools are prepared early to have parents buy school supplies. But are the parents ready? Probably not. Can every parent afford all of the school supplies on that list? Probably not. What happens if a parent has more than one child going to the same school? That is a lot of money to lay out just for school supplies.

What do parents do if they can't afford school supplies? Send their child to school empty-handed? Just because their parents can't afford school supplies or everything on the list, don’t the kids have to go to school anyway? This is part of the reason that teachers spend the first few weeks of school organizing fundraisers; they can't let students do without. It may be just to cover items on the school supply list or additional art supplies for the classroom. Wouldn't it be nice if the class could go on a field trip on a beautiful Fall day? Where would that money come from? Teachers are taking away precious time from their teaching days to do fundraising.
